Liam E. McGee, now chairman and president of The Hartford, started his career as a junior salesperson at Wells Fargo, essentially “dialing for dollars.” Describing himself as a shy person, he was so scared before his first in-person sales call that he got back in his car and drove away before walking in the front door! Slowly he began to overcome his fear—he knew he wouldn’t keep his job if he didn’t—and worked his way up the ranks.
