Her First Observations

The next morning, Julie was there when I arrived.

“Morning, Trevor. Ready for a great day?” She was almost chirping, she seemed so cheerful.

We had the usual chitchat. Then she explained that she was going to spend the next three hours standing in one place to watch what was going on.

“Doesn’t that get boring?” I asked.

She explained that she learned a lot from watching. She knew that for the first hour or so she’d see lots she didn’t understand, but, by the end of the three hours, she’d start to see patterns and variations to follow up on. She told me she’d never done this without learning a lot, and almost never without seeing some ideas for how to make things easier for the folks doing the work.
