He Quit – Learning to Instruct

A few weeks later on Thursday, I was just getting ready to leave when Steve stuck his head in the door. That was a surprise. Steve never stuck around. At the end of his shift he was gone within minutes. He didn’t speed away or squeal his tires, but he didn’t linger. So, if he was poking his head in my door 5 minutes after quitting time, something was up.

He was clearly feeling a bit uncomfortable as he told me that he’d found a better job and wanted to give his notice. He knew that two weeks’ notice was usual, but was hoping I’d be OK if he left at the end of the next week – six days’ notice.

What was I going to say? If I made him stay the full two weeks he’d be frustrated and his mind wouldn’t be on ...
