The New Order – Making Improvements
The next several weeks were the best of summer – long hot days and nights cool enough to sleep comfortably. By common consent at this time of year, the whole plant started and ended the workday an hour earlier. Most of us were away by two, which gave us most of the afternoon to take advantage of the weather. It also meant that we didn’t have to work through the heat of the day.
There were a couple of people who stayed more regular hours to answer the phones during conventional business hours, but they wanted to be there, and they were happy to stay in the air-conditioned office.
The weeks seemed to carry on in an endless parade of glorious days.
