Tiled Map Editor
Tiled is a general-purpose tile map editor that uses an XML-based map format with support for both orthogonal and isometric maps. There are versions for Windows, OS X, and Linux flavors, and it can be used with a variety of open source game engines. There are some really great features in the latest release, including support for polygon objects, support for tile rotation, and an “auto-mapping” feature that allows you to create rules to speed up creating maps and reducing errors in the map. Basically, this auto-mapping feature allows you to make sure you do not accidentally overwrite the wrong tile, an issue you will need to deal with as you design more complex levels.
