SQL Practical Introduction

Structured Query Language (SQL) is the most widely used language to interact with DBMSs. The purpose of this appendix is not to provide a comprehensive manual of SQL but rather to list and explain the most common concepts, terms, and statements. Most DBMSs don’t support the whole SQL standard. Moreover, vendors sometimes add nonstandard elements that, in practice, prevent full portability across DBMSs.
