Released in 1981 by Midway, Gorf is one of the most popular space shoot-em-ups to come out after Space Invaders and Galaxian. Perhaps this is because Gorf directly incorporates elements of both of those games into its design. Gorf is known for its robotic speech synthesis, which is used to heckle the player at various points throughout the game. The strange title is not “Frog backwards,” as some gamers thought, but is instead an acronym for Galactic Orbiting Robot Force. I kind of like the backwards Frog explanation better!
