Base, one of the latest additions to the OpenOffice.org family of applications, brings much-needed database capabilities to the suite. Databases are usually thought of as the preserve of either programmers or system administrators working in large organizations, which can lead more casual users either to regard them as too difficult to work with or, more likely, to ignore them altogether. And yet, a simple database can be an asset in so many ways, allowing a user to assemble, sort, and query a dataset to discover relationships that may not be apparent by looking at information in isolation.
