As of PHP 5, support was added for the open source database server SQLite (http://www.sqlite.org/). This was done partly in response to the decision to unbundle MySQL from version 5 due to licensing discrepancies and partly in response to a realization that users might benefit from the availability of another powerful database that nonetheless requires measurably less configuration and maintenance as compared to similar products.
