The development of the CAN bus (controller area network) began in 1983 at Robert Bosch GmbH as a way to standardize communications between components. Prior to this, automotive ECUs (engine control units) each had their own proprietary systems, which required a lot of point-to-point wiring. In 1986, Bosch released the developed CAN protocol at the SAE Congress (Society of Automotive Engineers). 1 In 1991 the CAN 2.0 protocol was published by Bosch and was adopted in 1993 as the international standard (ISO 11898).
