For those that know me, seeing that I’m writing an article on production sound would be quite amusing. In my early filmmaking days, I was notorious for making silent films so that I didn’t have to deal with sound. Later, I made an infinite number of sound mistakes before I started getting it right. Coming up through the camera side of filmmaking, sound was never my forte. Cameramen and sound mixers have a kind of natural animosity between them; a bit like cats and dogs. We get along, we can even be best friends, but a lot of times we end up circling each other with our haunches up and trying to stay out of each other’s way.
