The list of words that define management are revealing: direct, in charge, handle, control, and force. Looking at this list, it’s not a surprise that the term “management” has a distasteful Orwellian air.

Whether you have direct reports or not, you’re a manager. It might not say manager in your title, but I guarantee that on a daily basis, you are directing someone, you are handling a situation, and you are forcing your day in a certain direction.
