Can He Walk the Walk?

The Outlook for the Bernanke Fed

Reading Ben Bernanke’s speeches as a Fed governor is like staring at a stereogram—a three-dimensional picture that seems to rise up from the page. What stands out is that he seems to have systematically trained himself to become a top central banker. In almost fifty speeches, he covered not only most of the hot issues of monetary policy but also the regulatory and financial market issues. Moreover, he packed each speech with footnotes and references and carefully weighed all sides of the issues. As far as it is possible to study for the job, Bernanke has done it.
