On Being Published

For many years, I held onto the belief that if I was published in a magazine, I was worth something. The validation of my work and the dissemination of it to a publication’s readership would demonstrate that I had arrived. Nothing could have been further from the truth. At its best, being published is marketing for you, but even that isn’t always the case.

Never let a prospective client try to get you to work for free by saying, “It’ll be good exposure for you” or “We’ll give you photo credit.” Don’t let the lure of being published make that a viable option.
