Preface
This IBM® Redbook describes the best practices and methodology for planning,
designing, deploying, and managing Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) and
Operating System Provisioning (OSP) solutions in an on demand business
environment.
We start by discussing Electronic Software Distribution and Operating System
Provisioning fundamentals, discuss available IBM solutions and products in
these areas, followed by providing best practices and examples for implementing
these processes. Finally, we wrap up all these topics in the context of a real life
scenario
The target audience of this IBM Redbook is IT professionals implementing
Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) and Operating System Provisioning
(OSP) solutions in on demand business environments.
The team that wrote this IBM Redbook
This IBM Redbook was produced by a team of specialists from around the world
working at the International Technical Support Organization, Poughkeepsie
Center.
Choong Thio is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) and is also an
IBM second line manager. He is responsible for the mission, vision, and strategy
of Electronic Software Distribution and OS Provisioning within IBM Global
Services. In addition, Choong also has extensive architecture development and
software programming experience in the e-business systems management
arena. Choong has filed several patents for IBM, which are related to his work on
Electronic Software Distribution and OS Provisioning. Choong holds a Masters
degree in Computer Science from Stanford University and a Bachelors of
Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois.
Mickey Iqbal is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member. He is also an IBM
certified IT Architect and an IBM certified Executive Project Manager. Mickey has
led the IBM Global Services' strategy and architecture in the areas of electronic
software distribution and OS provisioning. He has led numerous client
engagements in these fields, and also has extensive architecture development
and project management experience in the e-business data management arena.
Mickey has also led ERP, CRM, systems analysis, applications development,
and data management projects across a number of different platforms and while

using a variety of software tools. Mickey is an advanced database researcher,
and his research work on data integration and semantic reconciliation among
heterogeneous information sources has been published in internationally
reviewed computer science journals and internationally reviewed information
systems conference proceedings. Mickey has also filed several patents for IBM,
which are related to his work on electronic software distribution and database
research. He holds a master's degree in business administration, a master of
science degree in management information systems, and a bachelor of science
in mechanical engineering.
Rajeev Puri has worked for IBM since 1994 and is a Senior Technical Staff
Member. During his career with IBM, Rajeev has been recognized as an expert in
Enterprise Infrastructure Management and Electronic Software Distribution.
Rajeev has created solutions covering a range of heterogeneous technologies,
including RISC/CISC, UNIX® (AIX®, SUN/Solaris™, HP-UX, and OSF/1),
Linux®, Windows®, Novell NetWare, DEC/VMS, Tivoli/BMC/
HP-OpenView/CA-Unicenter TNG/Microsoft® SMS, Novadigm, Marimba, NetIQ,
Oracle/MS-SQL/DB2® databases, HP-Toptools, Dell Open Manage, Compaq
Insight Manager, and custom integration and automation tools for servers and
workstations. Rajeev possesses IT experience in all phases of delivery, from
engagement, to transition, to implementation, and to addressing client-related
critical situations. Rajeev received his Master of Science in Computer Science
and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte.
Susan Guy is an IBM Manager of the OS Provisioning and Software Distribution
Technology Leadership team within Integrated Technology Delivery, Server
Systems Operations. Susan has worked for IBM for over 25 years and has more
than 13 years experience as both a technology leader and architect in the area of
software distribution technologies and processes leading several global
initiatives.
Vasfi Gucer is an IBM Certified Consultant IT Specialist working at the ITSO
Austin Center. He worked with IBM Turkey for 10 years and has been with the
ITSO since January 1999. He has more than 12 years of experience in systems
management, networking hardware, and distributed platform software. He has
worked on various Tivoli® client projects as a Systems Architect in Turkey and
the United States. Vasfi is also a Certified Tivoli Consultant.
