Cutaways, GVs, B Roll, Etc.
Cutaways, GVs, “B” roll, UPSOF, linking shots, generics…it seems that every TV station in the world has a different name for them but, call them by whatever name you will, they are the shots that go in between the actuality, and they can make a program, piece, or sequence look fantastic or look awful.
Some people say they are a black art conjured up by the devil himself, and many grown cameramen have been reduced to tears in many edit suites when it’s all gone wrong…after the shooting has ended. So it’s worth looking at this section of shooting and finding out what does work and what doesn’t, because as location cameramen we spend an awful lot of our time shooting them one way or another.
