arithmetic series: A sequence of numbers that progresses regularly by addition or subtraction of a constant.

ASA: American Standards Association, known since 1969 as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ASA is still occasionally used to identify film speeds as determined by ANSI. See ISO.

average gradient (Ḡ): The slope of a line connecting two selected points on the film characteristic curve. The average gradient line can be shown to form the hypotenuse of a right triangle of which the base is the exposure range and the altitude is the density range. The value of average gradient is then determined by dividing the density range by the exposure range.
