Chapter 3The Big Data Strategy Document

One of the biggest challenges organizations face with respect to big data is identifying where and how to start. The big data strategy document, detailed in this chapter, provides a framework for linking an organization's business strategy and supporting business initiatives to the organization's big data efforts. The big data strategy document guides the organization through the process of breaking down its business strategy and business initiatives into potential big data business use cases and the supporting data and analytic requirements.

The big data strategy document first appeared in my book Big Data: Understanding How Data Powers Big Business. Since then and courtesy of several client engagements, significant improvements have been made to help users to uncover big data use cases. In particular, the process has been enhanced to clarify the business value and implementation feasibility assessments of the different data sources and use case prioritization (see Figure 3.1).
