ANOTHER MINDSET CHALLENGE for a big-vision small-business owner is how we approach the concept of competition. Competition is as American as baseball and apple pie and so ingrained in every stratum of life that questioning how we think about competition almost seems blasphemous. In the most positive sense, competition can propel us to higher levels of performance and service and create the friction needed for personal and organizational evolution. And yet mindless competition can have negative consequences, particularly when virtues such as honesty, integrity, and fairness get set aside in the rush to win and “beat the competition.” ...
