Prologue

My undergraduate education in mechanical engineering, as well as my work at Raytheon, involved the mathematical modeling of physical systems. Humans may have operated or maintained these systems. However, the equations of my models did not include humans. It was not until MIT, discussed in this chapter, that I expanded my purview to consider human–machine systems. Now, the equations had to include representations of human behaviors. I also had to consider humans’ abilities and limitations in terms of the extent to which they could behave as needed. This led me to explore human anthropometry, physiology, and psychology. Sociology would come later.
