Prologue

I returned to Georgia Tech as the Chair of the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) in October 2001. This is the number one ranked program in the field, as of this writing, for over 30 years. Fortunately, this ranking did not suffer during my four years as Chair.

As discussed earlier, I felt that the program needed a tangible artifact – rather than just sets of equations – much as aeronautical engineering has airplanes, missiles, and satellites, civil engineering has bridges and roads, electrical engineering has computer hardware and electronics, and mechanical engineering has automobiles and factories.
