8.2. BIM and the Future from the Past

Imhotep first drew lines of ink on papyrus to indicate the outline of a structure, because this was the technology available to him (Figure 8.2). If the technology available to him had been a better technological advancement, would he have used it? Probably. He used ink because of necessity and availability. He might have asked himself, how can I communicate this design in my head to the workers who are building it? As this may have been a question of logistics, the question the modern construction industry is asking is, how can we best communicate the design and construction of a structure to everyone?
