So, exactly what is bioinspiration? Well, it depends on who you ask. Janine Benyus, an American biologist who coined the term in her 1997 book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature (Benyus 1997), described it as “the conscious emulation of nature’s genius.” She said we should view nature as model, measure, and mentor. From this perspective, humans are a young, naïve species that simply do not know how to design appropriately for the conditions on earth.
