Chapter 10

Nanomaterials and Phase Contrast Imaging Agents

Abstract

The leverage obtained by synthesizing smaller structures that possess different properties at the nanoscale and their ability to be harnessed to regulate their self-assembly into larger structures is presenting new opportunities to create enhancements in healthcare. If smaller particles can be conveyed across cell membranes, the blood–brain barrier, and the glomerular capsule linked with vascular clearance, there are keen opportunities to consider nanomaterials of wide range and scope as potential diagnostic imaging phase contrast fluids with increasing fidelity and resolution.
