Postface
Going into the biomaterials discipline as an early learner, I was struck by how challenging it was to identify exactly why some devices and tools were fast tracked into clinical use, while thousands of good ideas languished as unutilized intellectual property. Even now, it is still a challenge to identify the cost of individual procedures even on a generalized basis. The lack of a value assessment makes it hard to choose where to invest one’s time as a researcher or an engineer. This book has been written to provide a rationale for why at least point to a larger rationale for why medical advancement is at the confluence of both good technical ideas, linked with facilitating the need to intervene clinically.
