Neural brain activation imaging

R.M. Sanchez Panchuelo, M.C. Stephenson, S.T. Francis and P.G. Morris,    University of Nottingham, UK

Abstract:

This chapter gives an overview of some of the important advances made in multimodal imaging approaches. It focuses on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), outlining the origins of the blood oxygenation level dependant (BOLD) contrast, alternative measures using arterial spin labelling (ASL), and applications of fMRI. Techniques for assessing the electromagnetic signals associated with neural activity are then outlined, and how these can be combined with fMRI. Finally a review of spectroscopic techniques to assess brain metabolism is provided.
