Physics provides enabling tools for physicians. This is not meant to detract from the importance of biochemistry or genetics, but stresses the unique role of physical methods in modern medicine and biomedical research, in particular for diagnostic purposes. Beginning with simple measurements of body temperature or blood pressure, method development has led to state of the art imaging and microscopy techniques, and is not likely to stop here. In this monograph we treat modern biomedical imaging techniques, not only in the context of clinical radiology, but also in preclinical research.
