The northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is native to Europe. It is affectionately known as the peewit, in imitation of its display calls. Its distinctive shape and coloring and its splendid crest attracted me to build it in LEGO.

• The northern lapwing is a medium-sized bird about 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) in length and belongs to the family Charadriidae.

• It can be seen all year round in the U.K.—in marshes, meadows, and moors and can be seen flocking on ploughed fields. They nest on the ground.
