The first language plays a fundamental role in structuring processes of voluntary thought and patterns of intersubjective communication. Derived from significant other people (e.g., parents, siblings, playmates) during the first months and years of life, the categories, norms, concepts, and the grammar and syntax of the first language turn the child into a social being who can actively participate in the speech community.
