6 The dynamics of identity
Every individual has a sense of identity which serves as a nucleus for (inter-) action. Without notions of identity there would be no need for human interaction. However, identity is not a stable feature of the individual. It is not given (with the exception of an identity assigned by others), but is discursively constructed through interaction with others by using symbolic sign systems such as language. Notions of identity are only possible to develop and sustain in dialogue with others. Thus, identity is constantly under construction by the subject and relevant others; it is facilitated in the intersubjective space and temporarily adopted by the subject for certain purposes.
