CHAPTER 11Stop Caring
People actually care too much about things, plain and simple. Caring too much actually inhibits their ability to grow. What do I mean by that? It's such a crazy thing to say. Mike, are you saying that I shouldn't care about my job, my business, my life, my children, or my work ethic? No, no, that's not what I'm saying.
One of the things that I think is happening today is people care too much about what other people think and say. What exactly does that mean? Now, I care about my reputation and that is different from caring what people think and say. I'm sure you care about your reputation if you're reading this. Most likely people care about their reputation, but the challenge is that too many people care about what other people think and say.
The day I stopped caring about what other people think is truly the day when I was set free. It may sound a little weird, but it's a reality. The day I stopped caring is the day I actually started to grow. I remember where I was and I remember whom I was talking to. There was a real moment in my life when I just said, “I am no longer going to care what other people think about me.” It's a really, really hard thing to do, because it's hard to separate things like your reputation which is something you care about from what people say and think. People care about their reputation, and I will explain the difference in a bit about your reputation and what people think or say.
