1.33. The aspect ratio used in standard definition television. Also referred to as “4:3.”

1.37. The aspect ratio used in sync-sound 35mm film. Also referred to as “Academy aperture.”

1.78. The aspect ratio used in widescreen television. Also referred to as “16:9.”

1.85. 35mm widescreen standard for theatrical film. Uses approximately 3 perforations (“perfs”) of image space per 4 perf frame. Also known as “flat.”

2.35. 35mm anamorphic widescreen prior to 1970, used by CinemaScope and early Panavision. Newer anamorphic films are actually 2.39, but are conventionally referred to as 2.35.
