Every moment of every day, you project an image of yourself just as others do. People use a plethora of props, such as hats, pens, glasses and make-up, to create an image. Mention props to an actor and her eyes come alive. She knows that these inanimate objects are her friends. Props can create an image behind which you can hide or through which you can reveal your character.

As you observe someone and the way in which she accessorises herself, you can figure out what that person is like. Your success rate depends on your level of sensitivity, and your ability to recognise and interpret what other people’s choice of props, or accessories, is revealing.

In this chapter I look at how the way you handle your props reflects your thoughts, mood and intentions. I also consider the choice of props, and how you use them to create a perception. Finally, I ponder the power behind the prop.
