What Were We Thinking?

Office politics has gotten a bad rap. To some of us it is a dirty word; yet others seem to understand intuitively that political savvy is the key to the corporate kingdom. It's how business is done.

According to John Eldred, a consultant and professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Management, “Politics is simply how power gets worked out on a practical, day-to-day basis.”1 Eldred, who teaches a course called Mastering Organizational Politics and Power, goes on to say, “People in organizations demonstrate power in every conversation, every decision, and every interaction.”2
