Tier 3—Lateral: Academia

Abstract

Academia refers to positions in accredited four-year colleges or universities. Positions at two-year technical colleges are closer to that described in the Trainer-Educator chapter. As a professor you will have responsibility for doing research and generally teaching one or more courses per semester, though some professors who have enough outside funding can exclusively do research. How academia prioritizes the two can be summed up with the phrase “publish or perish.” For those in tenure track-positions, but who have not achieved it, publishing is essential for receiving tenure.
