In this chapter, we're going to focus on getting your business on track. Actually, when I say ‘we', I really mean you. I'll give you the recipe, but you've got to get the ingredients and do the cooking. To continue with the food analogy, one of our guiding principles with our clients is to ‘teach them to fish'. Solving clients' problems directly doesn't allow them to develop the skills to solve future problems.
We can tell you the headings you need to cover, but only you can fill in the words. We can show you some ways to think about these things, some examples to follow and some pitfalls to avoid; however, only you can apply it to your world.
But let me tell you this: if you think it doesn't apply to you, try a little harder. Make it apply. These are ideas to grow into, and we're putting them out there because they work. But they only work because people make them work. They don't say ‘Does this apply to my business?' They take the concept and ask ‘How would this work in my business?' There is a world of difference in the answers to those two questions.
The best questions start with how, not why.
The first decision point is your aspiration: What do you want to become? If you either don't care or just want more of the same, your recipe is simply to keep doing what you've been doing and whatever occurs to you at the time. You'll never be wrong because there are no reference points.
