We looked at how the mind and body interact with each other in the previous chapter and how the stress response is activated even when we don’t realise it. Here we will discuss the mind–body relationship in more detail and link it to the important and life-giving issue of our breathing. You may be wondering how this has any relevance to mindfulness but you’ll soon come to see that being aware of your breathing is the central point of mindfulness work as the way in which we breathe can help lower our levels of emotional and physical stress and refocus our attention on that part of ourselves that is stable and resilient.
