A Model for Problem Solving

The Model

All the individual elements necessary to bring out the best in people must be applied in a systematic format for solving performance problems and maximizing performance. In the early 1960s, Ogden Lindsley (1991) developed such a model and used it effectively in his work with parents, teachers, and students. He wanted a way of solving problems that would be simple for parents to use and to teach to their children.

The original model was composed of four steps

  1. Pinpoint
  2. Record
  3. Consequate
  4. Evaluate

I modified Lindsley’s model slightly for use in business. I divided the second step, Record, into the substeps of Measure and Feedback, and changed “Consequate” to “Reinforce.” The resulting model looks this: ...
