1.5.1 Cable Transmission

The use of cable for distribution of broadcast signals is not new. Provision of a central reception point for radio sound programmes and a distribution network dates from 1924 in the UK. Modest networks distributed television programmes before 1939. More than 13 per cent of television viewers in the UK receive their programmes by means of cable, with much higher percentages in other parts of Europe, Canada and the USA. Existing UK networks must conform to various technical requirements, and must be licensed. Various BSI Specifications and other documents exist (see Bibliography).
