All television programmes are edited. Even the earliest live transmissions used more than one camera and switching from one camera to another is a form of editing. However, the term edit is more commonly used to mean a process of compiling previously recorded scenes into a finished programme.

The earliest movies simply recorded an entire event from a single viewpoint as if one were a viewer at that location.
