5.5 Battery Systems
Portable broadcast equipment, including camcorders, field editors, monitors and associated equipment, is generally powered from rechargeable batteries. Digital broadcast technology demands more power from batteries than ever before, while the equipment itself becomes ever smaller and lighter, and the broadcast engineer is further challenged by the availability of several battery chemistries, each of which has specific advantages and disadvantages. This chapter explains the fundamentals of rechargeable battery performance, discusses the different chemistries and the trade-offs between them, and provides information concerning battery maintenance and disposal.
