The recording business has come a long way since 1898 when Valdemar Poulsen first captured sound on piano wire fixed to a hand-turned drum. Today, digital recordings of sparkling quality can be made and edited directly on computers of all shapes and sizes, be they dressed up as camcorders, minidisc machines or flash-card recorders.

Miniaturization has made it possible for today’s reporters to move unhampered to the forefront of breaking stories and send back live, studio-quality reports via satellite link, mobile phone and wi-fi to be played straight to air or put onto a website.
