Through the 1980s and 1990s the main way to get television news was through a bundle of processes and technology called ENG (Electronic News Gathering). Film – the rolls of pictures in cans – was walked over by the ENG upstart. Also called EJ (electronic journalism), ECC (electronic camera coverage) or PSC (portable single camera) this was the 1980s technical solution to the bulkiness of film and the demand for faster news with lighter equipment.
