Summary

Werner Beinbart, based on a popular series of comic books, began as a $4.2 million domestic comedy, which, with strong support from television and a hefty contribution from German film subsidies, appeared to have little downside risk. The popularity of the comic books ensured a high public profile for the film, which only needed to perform reasonably well for the producers, who also distributed the film in Germany, to make a profit on their investment.
