Chapter 7 The big decisions

European producers are thus faced with a number of key decisions concerning the financing plans for their films. They must:

  1. Identify the kind of film they are trying to make.
  2. Identify the audience.
  3. Assess the markets.
  4. Assess the different media within those markets.
  5. Decide on the appropriate budget.

Casting and other factors will change the budget this way and that before the film finally goes into production, but if the producer does not know at an early stage the appropriate base level of expenditure that matches the expected international audience for the film, he or she will lose control of the financial planning of the film.
