Introduction

This chapter reviews the important organisational issue of disengagement. We illuminate the significant challenge facing organisations in relation to building an engaged workforce in the face of a disengagement epidemic that is plaguing organisations worldwide. There are many different reasons why employees may find themselves either passively or actively disengaged. We will not review literature concerned with workload, work-life issues or negative stress as this literature has been more than adequately covered.
