Dimensional Modeling
Abstract
Data Vault modeling is not a replacement for dimensional modeling, which is an industry standard for defining the data mart (the layer used to present the data to the end-user). Because the book is meant to cover the whole process of building a data warehouse end-to-end, it also covers dimensional modeling. The first part of this chapter focuses on basic entities in dimensional modeling – fact entities and dimension entities. Fact entities store the measurements, metrics, or facts of a business process. Dimension entities contain descriptive attributes for the facts. It will discuss various dimension types, such as slowly changing dimensions and how to query data from a dimensional model.
