9 Establishing the Conditions for Constructive Debate

Constructive debates are, for many, a new way to approach idea development and problem-solving. The process goes against some habitual patterns of interaction and may even challenge organizational taboos such as “don’t contradict the boss” or “avoid the appearance of conflict in the team.” To make the process successful, you’ll want to make it easier for team members to accept the risks involved in speaking out and speaking up. This requires conscious and thoughtful design so you can reduce the risks of saying what you really think and make it easier and more rewarding to participate.
