Background monitoring and ranging

Background monitoring in the Estimote SDK is used to trigger an event whenever the device enters or leaves the range of the beacon. Consider an example of a designer store. The user gets a Welcome to our designer store notification on his cell phone as soon as he walks in the store. The detection of the application in the proximity of the beacon is achieved by background monitoring. 

Background monitoring can detect the presence of your application near an Estimote beacon, but to make it truly powerful, one must use ranging. Monitoring only enables the app to recognize whether the user has entered or exited an area, while ranging, on the other hand, causes an application to constantly scan for nearby beacons. ...
