FAMILIARITY BREEDS COMPLACENCY more often than contempt. Americans, accustomed to a nation where diverse peoples are united under “common rules of citizenship,” to use Nathan Glazer’s elegant phrase, take their system for granted.1 Yet the United States may be unique in its diversity ideals and their accompanying challenges, and we’re not doing well at meeting them.
